Junior Road Safety Officers
The Role of a Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO)

Our Junior Road Safety Officers are pupils who help make our school community safer by promoting important road safety messages. As part of the Hampshire County Council JRSO programme, they take an active role in encouraging everyone to stay safe on and near the roads.
What do JRSOs do?
- Share road safety messages with the school through assemblies, class talks, and notice boards.
- Organise fun activities and competitions to help pupils learn about crossing roads safely, cycling safely, and being seen by traffic.
- Create posters and displays to remind everyone about key safety tips.
- Support school events like Walk to School Week and Bikeability training.
- Work with teachers and the Road Safety Team to spread awareness in a fun and engaging way.
Why is this role important? Road safety is vital for everyone. By leading these activities, JRSOs help reduce accidents and teach their friends how to stay safe when walking, cycling, or travelling in vehicles.
How do pupils become JRSOs? pupils from Year 5 are chosen each year. They attend a special training session run by Hampshire County Council, where they learn everything they need to know to carry out their role confidently.
Being a JRSO is a fantastic opportunity to develop leadership skills, creativity, and responsibility while making a real difference to our school community.
